Everyday Cards for Everyday Heroes

The National Day of Service and Remembrance is Tuesday, September 11, 2012 and Veteran’s Day is Sunday, November 11, 2012. Everyday Cards for Everyday Heroes offer customers opportunities to express their gratitude to active members of the US Armed Forces, first responders, and veterans, as well as medical professionals, public servants, teachers, volunteers, and parents. The six card designs cost $2.95 each. Everyday Cards for Everyday Heroes are available at these select Post Offices.

JAF Mail Handlers Celebrate Retirement

JAF employees held a farewell party for mail handlers Orlando Green and Nellie King, who are retiring from the U.S. Postal Service.
Green, who has worked for USPS for 28 years, said "its been good," and is looking forward to finally taking it easy.
King, with more than 31 years of service, said she plans to work in the ministry and volunteer to work with the elderly, after taking a well earned vacation of course.

Parkchester Post Office Dedicated to the Memory of Bronx Hero

          Postal Officials, family members, local politicians, veterans associations and community gathered in the Bronx to designate the Parkchester Post Office in honor of Army Private 2^nd Class Isaac T. Cortes.

          Through the efforts of New York Congressman Joseph Crowley who sponsored the legislation to rename the Parkchester Post Office after Private Cortes, the Bill was approved by the full Congress and signed into law by the President of the United States.

Private 2nd Class Isaac T. Cortes

          Private Cortes grew up in the Bronx and in preparation for a career with the NYPD, enlisted in the Army in 2006. In September of 2007, he was sent to Iraq where he participated in mounted and dismounted patrols. Isaac engaged in weapons cache searches and Humanitarian Aid missions to the local people. On November 27, 2007, Private Isaac T. Cortes was one of two soldiers killed when an improvised explosive device was detonated as his vehicle rode past in Amerli Iraq, about 100 miles north of Baghdad.

          At the event held right outside the Post Office, Master of Ceremonies, Bronx Postmaster Elvin Mercado told the large congregation, “It is particularly fitting that this building, which is housed in the community where Isaac was born and raised, should be dedicated in his honor. Isaac’s name on its walls will reflect the appreciation we feel for the leadership he exercised while serving his country to protect the freedom of the American people.”

          Private Cortes received many awards and decorations; including the Purple Heart, The Bronze Star, The National Defense Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

          The Postal Service employs more than 116,000 veterans which is approximately 21 percent of the career workforce. Roughly one-third of USPS vets are rated 30 percent or more disabled. Nearly 15,000 employees in the Northeastern United States are military veterans.

          Congratulations are in order for Cornell and Throggs Neck Stations for reaching and surpassing 100 percent participation in the Customer Connect program.
How do you get more than 100 percent participation?
          Simple. Every station is assessed how many leads their Letter Carriers can submit according to how many routes are in place and how many business customers are on those routes. When a unit's Letter Carriers submit enough leads to meet the target amount, they achieve 100 percent in Customer Connect participation. When Letter Carriers submit more leads than the target number they were assessed, their participation number goes up exponentially.
          Thus, Cornell achieved 125 percent in Quarter2 and Throggs Neck scored a whopping 175 percent in Quarter1.
          Customer Connect encourages Letter Carriers to leverage their business relationship with customers by identifying new business opportunities and obtaining customer concurrence to meet with a sales representative. To find out more about the Customer Connect program Click HERE

Add Audubon and Colonial to the elite list of New York District Stations whose employees had zero motor vehicle accidents Year-To-Date (YTD) in Fiscal Year 2012.
"Its a tremendous accomplishment on the part of these employees," said Manhattan Postmaster Robert Brown who made the presentation at the respective stations. "It takes determination to get through the day when driving in the streets of New York. To do it every day without incurring an accident is truly remarkable."

It's No Accident These Letter Carriers are Recognized

           New York Postmaster Robert Brown has been very busy lately visiting the various Manhattan stations whose Letter Carriers are motor vehicle accident free Year-to-Date (YTD) in fiscal year 2012.
"To be able to drive in this city every day without getting into an accident is remarkable," said Brown when he presented the Letter Carriers with a commemorative pen from the New York Safety Office. "Speaking for the Managers, Supervisors and our customers, we are all very proud of them."
